Eine 50-minütige 4-Kanal-Klanginstallation, gespielt im Garten des Zürcher Cafés Miyuko, umgeben vom täglichen Lärm der Stadt.

Baustellen an allen drei Lebensorten: in der Wohnung in Wipkingen, im Café an der Bärengasse, in der Produktionsstätte in Rümlang. Über Monate hinweg ist der Zürcher Musiker und Gastronom An Moku (Dominik Grenzler) dem Baulärm ausgesetzt ohne Rückzugsort, ohne Stille. Aus dieser Überforderung heraus entsteht die Idee, selbst einen Ort zu schaffen. Kein Ort der Flucht, sondern ein Ort des Akustischen: ein Refugium im Experiment.

This Is Not a Site, Noise (Not) Included) versammelt leise Klänge: Naturgeräusche, Feldaufnahmen, reduzierte Tonflächen aufgenommen auf Reisen, an Rändern, in Zwischenräumen der Stadt Zürich.

Natürlich trifft Klang auf Klang, die Komposition mischt sich unweigerlich mit dem akustischen Umfeld, wird Teil einer unfreiwilligen Klangkollage. Doch gerade darin liegt der Reiz: In den Momenten, in denen der Baulärm abklingt, öffnen sich akustische Zwischenräume. Die leisen Klänge aus den Lautsprechern Vogelrufe, Wasser, Insekten treten hervor. Fast unmerklich.

Und plötzlich stellt sich die Frage: Wo kommt das her? Und: Ist es real?

Die Komposition ist ein akustischer Rückzug und zugleich eine Geste des Widerstands. Sie fragt: Wo beginnt ein Ort? Wo endet Lärm? Was geschieht, wenn man nichts hinzufügt, sondern etwas wegnimmt?

Kein Spektakel. Kein Maschinenklang. Stattdessen: Luft. Vögel. Wasser. Zeit. Insekten. Minimale Instrumentalisierung.
Ein temporärer Ort ohne Baustelle aber mit Bedeutung.

Am 6. Juli veranstaltet der Musiker ein Event im Garten des Café Miyuko, bei dem das Stück erstmals erklingen wird als ambientartige Klangkulisse, als unaufdringliche akustische Schicht. Gespielt wird eine vorläufige Stereoversion, abgespielt von Band über eine Revox A77, ab 19 Uhr.

Geplant ist eine Veröffentlichung über das italienische Label DIO DRONE; nähere Informationen gibt es in Kürze.

Ein Nachtrag zum gestrigen Tag: Wegen des Regens wurde die Veranstaltung vom Aussenbereich in das Innere des Cafés Miyuko verlegt. Der isländische Film «Woman at War» wurde spontan ohne Originalton gezeigt und stattdessen von den Klängen der Installation begleitet. Natürlich wusste ich nicht, ob dieses Experiment gelingen wird und doch überraschte das Ergebnis!

A 50-minute, 4-channel sound installation, presented in the garden of Café Miyuko in Zurich surrounded by the city’s constant construction noise.

Construction sites in all three places of life: the apartment in Wipkingen, the café on Bärengasse, the production space in Rümlang. For months, Zurich-based musician and gastronome An Moku (Dominik Grenzler) has been exposed to a relentless soundscape without refuge, without silence.

Out of this exhaustion comes an idea: to create a place. Not a place of escape, but an acoustic space. A refuge through experiment.

This Is Not a Site, Noise (Not) Included) gathers quiet sounds: nature recordings, field recordings, reduced tonal fragments captured on travels, along edges, in the in-between spaces of Zurich.

Inevitably, sound meets sound, the composition blends into the acoustic environment, forming an involuntary collage. But its essence lies elsewhere: in the brief moments when the noise fades, and an acoustic gap opens. From the speakers emerge barely perceptible sounds: birds, water, insects.

And suddenly one wonders: Where is that coming from? And: Is it real?

The piece is both a sonic retreat and a gesture of resistance. It asks: Where does a place begin? Where does noise end? What happens when you don’t add anything but take something away?

No spectacle. No machinery. Instead: air. Birds. Water. Time. Insects. Minimal instrumentation. A temporary place without construction but full of meaning.

On July 6, the musician will host an event in the garden of Café Miyuko, where the piece will quietly unfold for the first time as an ambient soundscape and unobtrusive sonic layer, played in a preliminary stereo version from tape on a Revox A77, starting at 7 PM.

A release through the Italian label DIO DRONE is planned; further details will follow shortly.

An addendum to yesterday: Due to the rain, the event was relocated from the outdoor area to inside the artist’s café Miyuko. The Icelandic film Woman at War was screened spontaneously without its original sound and accompanied instead by the installation’s sound. Of course, I didn’t know whether this experiment would succeed and yet the result was a surprise!
