Industrial Silence [This Is Not a Site, Noise (Not) Included]

«Industrial Silence» des Zürcher Kunstschaffenden und Gastronomen An Moku (Dominik Grenzler) verwandelt monatelangen Baulärm, dem er ausgesetzt war, in ein akustisches Refugium. Leislaute Naturklänge (Feldaufnahmen von Vogelrufen, Wasser und Insekten, aufgenommen in Zürich und Umgebung sowie auf der Isle of Harris) treffen auf reduzierte Tonflächen und öffnen Zwischenräume im urbanen Geräusch. Die Komposition verzichtet auf Spektakel und Maschinenklang, setzt auf minimale Instrumentalisierung und fragt: Wo beginnt ein Ort, wo endet Lärm?
Stille rahmt das Stück wie eine Ellipse. Am Anfang wie am Ende hat, für einen Augenblick, die Natur das letzte Wort. Stille.
«Industrial Silence» fungierte in den warmen Monaten des Jahres 2025 als Outdoor-Installation an der Bärengasse, nahe Paradeplatz in Zürich. In Endlosschleife abgespielt, verstand sich die Komposition als leiser Protest gegen den Dauerlärm.
«Industrial Silence [This Is Not a Site, Noise (Not) Included]» (50 Min.) ist ein dynamisches Stück, das irritieren und zugleich leise im Hintergrund gehört werden darf.

«Industrial Silence» by Zurich-based artist and restaurateur An Moku (Dominik Grenzler) transforms months of construction noise to which he was exposed into an acoustic refuge. Softly resonant sounds of nature (field recordings of birdsong, water and insects, captured in and around Zurich as well as on the Isle of Harris) meet restrained tonal surfaces, opening up interstitial spaces within the urban soundscape. The composition dispenses with spectacle and the sound of machinery; instead, it relies on minimal instrumentation and asks: Where does a place begin, and where does noise end?
Silence frames the piece like an ellipse. At the beginning and at the end, for a brief moment, nature has the final word. Silence.
During the warm months of 2025, Industrial Silence functioned as an outdoor installation at Bärengasse, near Paradeplatz in Zurich. Played on a continuous loop, the composition understood itself as a quiet protest against constant noise.
«Industrial Silence [This Is Not a Site, Noise (Not) Included]» (50 min.) is a dynamic piece that may unsettle, yet can also be listened to quietly in the background.
